Tom Parkes, LCSW

Hi! I'm Tom Parkes, a skilled and compassionate therapist committed to helping individuals build rich and meaningful lives even in the midst of hardship.

My approach is collaborative and client-centered, tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. I work to build a strong therapeutic relationship where you feel unconditionally accepted, while also being challenged in a direct and kind manner.

My practice integrates evidence-based techniques with a holistic understanding of mental health to support you in your journey of building a values-driven life.

I attended the University of Connecticut for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have prior experience working with youth in the juvenile justice system and training mental health professionals around the country in treating trauma.

Outside of therapy, I am enjoy spending time with my wife and dog, making music, spending time in nature, and reading about eastern philosophy.

I welcome you to reach out and schedule a consultation.

Third Wave Psychotherapy

Third Wave Psychotherapy was founded in 2015 by Bryan Landaas, LCSW in Raleigh, North Carolina. What began as a small practice has now grown into a thriving group of over 20 therapists with offices across Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Third Wave is committed to bringing high quality mental health services to the community through living aligned to values of intentionality, courage, authenticity, and creativity.

Tom Parkes joined Third Wave in 2019 and instantly connected with the practice’s values and mission. His commitment to effective, experiential mental health treatment was cultivated through his mentorship by practice founder, Bryan Landaas, LCSW.

As Tom left North Carolina to return back to his home state of Connecticut, it was clear that an ongoing collaboration would be invaluable. Third Wave and Tom are proud to carry on a partnership with a new office in beautiful Avon, Connecticut.

Bryan Landaas, LCSW

Founder

Bryan Landaas founded Third Wave Psychotherapy in 2015 and served as its fearless leader until his passing from Glioblastoma in June 2022 at the age of 42. He was an inspired clinician and innovative thinker who saw great potential for reinvigorating the field of mental health. Bryan saw a future where going to therapy wasn’t solely to treat serious mental health disorders, but also as a natural practice for overall wellbeing. He was grounded in a philosophy that saw each individual as important, all with their unique path  towards a rich and meaningful life. This stance on life was integrated into the clinical foundation of Third Wave through his enthusiasm for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Bryan envisioned a space where clients and employees alike felt safe, respected, and eager to grow. He inspired everyone around him to pursue evidence based therapy principles while highlighting the importance of fellowship and collaboration.

Bryan built Third Wave upon the core values of Intentionality, Courage, Creativity, and Authenticity all who knew Bryan were able to see him express these qualities each day. Bryan’s intentionality remains as you walk through the beautiful office spaces he designed. He believed that how you feel in a space is just as important as what you feel. His courage lives on through his ability to think outside of the box, which allowed him to establish and grow Third Wave when safer alternatives were available. His creativity is clear to all the therapists and clients who benefit from the practice culture and sense of community. And Bryan’s authenticity will forever remain in all the lives he touched as well as the ongoing commitment of Third Wave to carry on his vision.
